What role Dr. Mengele play in the atrocities at Auschwitz?
The holocaust was a time of great suffering and death for over twelve million people. A group of sinister individuals made it their goal to rid Europe of anyone who did not share their beliefs. This included Jews, Roma (Gypsy), communists, socialists, Slavs, and an abundance of others who were targeted. Among these monstrous people was Dr. Josef Mengele. Mengele was enlisted in the Waffen SS , helping the German army in the medical forces during World War II. He was wounded on the front and transferred to Auschwitz in 1942. May 30, 1943 he was appointed camp doctor in the Gypsy Family camp that himself created. Auschwitz was his first choice because there was financial support for his research. Throughout his life he studied physical anthropology and genetics at the Frankfurt University Institute of Heredity, Biology, and Racial Hygiene. Unfortunately, his education is what made the research he conducted possible. Dr Mengele played a main role in the holocaust with his selection duties, his medical experiments, and his escape.
