medical experiments
The abominable Josef Mengele is also remembered for the medical experiments he performed in Auschwitz. During his time on the ramp in selections Mengele would search for people who had differences that interested him. For example, he enjoyed studying twins. He would weigh, measure, and compare them in any way possible. Also, he would infect one twin with a disease and wait until after its death. After it died he would kill the other twin by phenol injection or gunfire then compare the infected body to the healthy body. In addition, he once tried to sew a pair of twins together to form siamese twins. His ultimate goal was to create the perfect German children with blond hair, blue eyes, and fair features. In order to achieve his goal he also studied how to change the eye color of his subjects. While doing so he often burned their eyes and sometimes blinded them. Correspondingly he studied heterochromia which is the condition in which someone is born with two different color eyes. Another nickname he earned was "the collector of blue eyes". A visitor to Auschwitz remembers what he saw by saying, "In June 1943 I went to the Gypsy Camp in Birkenau. I saw a wooden table. On it were samples of eyes. They each had a number and a letter" (Scrapbook). Although Mengele was licensed to maim and kill his subjects he often showed then an ample amount of affection. Aside from the brutal experiments they were treated better than anyone else in the camp. Furthermore, he gifted them with chocolate and rides in his car. Often, most of the kids referred to him as uncle. Interestingly, Mengele was not the average Aryan himself. He was often mistaken for a Gypsy. Due to the confusion he developed a strong hatred for them and used them for the harshest and deadliest experiments. These experiments included operations without anesthesia, the removal of limbs and sexual organs, and sex change operations.
